Gorge River Hut
Gorge River Hut is a DOC backcountry hut in the Jackson Bay–Gorge River area on New Zealand’s West Coast. It’s a standard six-bunk hut used for overnight stays in the South Westland area, with no DOC track access—plan your route and navigate yourself with map, compass, and GPS.
Use is first come, first served (no bookings required), but you need a Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box for each night you stay, or a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for 12 months. Fees are listed as $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). The hut has drinking water available as untreated water, provides mattresses, and has toilets with pit-latrine disposal; there is also a fireplace.
