H. E. L. Porter Memorial Lodge

H. E. L. Porter Memorial Lodge is a backcountry hut run by the NZ Alpine Club in the Fox Glacier Township area, set up as a roadside base for people doing nearby climbing and family trips in the West Coast region. It has bench bunks for 20 people across 2 rooms, plus water on tap, showers, and flush toilets; there are also drying rooms and a shared lounge and kitchen with cooking gear (including a fridge/freezer and pots, pans, and utensils).

Access is by road with off-street parking, but the lodge is locked by keypad and the code changes frequently. Hut fees are paid when you book online; card payments and NZ bank transfers are both offered. Members, non-members, and youth rates are listed for overnight use, and there’s also a day-use option. Dogs are limited to the confines of the Fox Village streets and one designated area by the local stop-bank; they’re not allowed in the rest of the site. Plan to take out all your rubbish, bring your own toilet paper, and expect firewood may not always be available.
