Horace Walker Hut

Horace Walker Hut is a four-bunk backcountry hut in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, run by the Department of Conservation in the West Coast region. It’s in the Glacier area and uses a first-come, first-served system—standard hut bookings aren’t required as long as you’ve paid for the stay using the required hut ticket in the honesty box (or a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period).

Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4); rates are scheduled to change from 1 July 2026. The hut is set up with mattresses and has a fireplace. Drinking water isn’t provided, and toilets are via a pit latrine (toilet disposal is by pit latrine).
