John Hayward Memorial Hut

John Hayward Memorial Hut (Kowai Hut) is a backcountry hut operated through Brooksdale Station, on private land just outside the Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park. It has 6 bunks and is maintained for public use only if permission is sought from Brooksdale Station.

The hut provides heating (a wood burner) and basic sleeping comfort with mattresses, plus toilets. Water is available from a nearby water body. The hut was built in 1973 by Lincoln College (University) for research purposes, and it was later upgraded to a 6-bunk setup; volunteers also replaced the door and fire in mid April 2026.
