Julia Hut

Julia Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the Kelly Range–Styx River area of New Zealand’s West Coast region, run by the Department of Conservation. Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—and the hut is set up for overnight stays with a mattress and an open fireplace, plus pit latrines and untreated water from the local supply.

Fees apply: adults (18+) pay $10 per night, youths (5–17) pay $5 per night, and children/infants (0–4) are free. Even though bookings aren’t required, you need to buy a Standard Hut Ticket (adult: blue; youth: yellow) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut; a Backcountry Hut Pass can provide unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period. The Department of Conservation page for Julia Hut also lists track time as 2 days (Expert) or 3–4 days (Expert).
