Kellys Hunters Hut
Kellys Hunters Hut is a DOC-owned backcountry hunters’ hut in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura. It’s a basic six-bunk hut used for hunters who have booked surrounding hunting blocks; bookings and payment are handled through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre, and use is for the public when capacity/bunk allocations allow.
The hut has six bunks, multi-fuel burners, rainwater tank water (untreated—boil before drinking), mattresses, a stainless-steel meat safe, and a toilet (pit latrine). It also includes an axe or saw plus a broom and dust pan, but there are no cooking options and utensils; fees are $30 per person for stays up to 10 days (for example, 1 night costs $30). The hut has no DOC track access, so you need to plan your own route and navigate using map, compass, and GPS.
