Lake Mackenzie Hut
Lake Mackenzie Hut is a 50-bunk backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation, set in Fiordland National Park on the Routeburn Track. It’s a communal hut with mattresses, plus a cooking area and flushing toilets (no showers).
Use is tied to the Great Walks season: in-season, bookings are required, and the hut operates with reduced facilities outside the Great Walks season (1 May–31 October vs 1 November–30 April). Backcountry Hut Passes can only be used in this hut from 1 May to 31 October, and beds are first-come, first-served outside the Great Walks season. Water arrangements also change seasonally, so plan on managing your own cooking setup outside the Great Walks season (bring a stove when gas isn’t provided).
