Lame Duck Hut

Lame Duck Hut is a standard 4-bunk backcountry hut in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (Glaciers area), run by the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai. It’s set up for first-come, first-served use rather than standard bookings.

The hut sleeps 4 and has an interior mattress set, a fireplace, and pit latrine toilets. Drinking water is untreated—plan to treat or filter it before use. Hut stays require a Standard Hut Ticket for each night (blue for adults, yellow for youth) placed in the honesty box; alternatively, a Backcountry Hut Pass covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for 12 months.
