Lochinvar Hut

Lochinvar Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the Lochinvar Forest Conservation Area (North Canterbury and Arthur’s Pass area), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—and you’ll need a DOC Standard Hut Ticket for each night, placed in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts).

Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4) up to 30 June 2026; updated rates apply from 1 July 2026. Access is foot via the Poulter Valley to Turnbull bivvy and the East Poulter Gorge; you must have landholder permission for access through Mount White Station unless using the Poulter Valley track on foot or mountain bike. The hut has pit latrine toilets, and is set up for sleeping with mattresses; no drinking water is provided, and there is a fireplace.
