Maitland Hut

Maitland Hut is a standard four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruataniwha Conservation Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a first-come, first-served hut that’s typically used as an overnight stop for advanced/experienced backcountry travel.

Expect pit latrine toilets, a fireplace, and a mattress; there’s no drinking water provided. Hut fees apply (adult $10 per night through 30 June 2026), and you’ll need the correct hut ticket/passthrough for each night. The hut is about 4 hours (10 km) from Lake Ohau Road, and there’s a permission requirement to cross private land at the start of the Maitland Track (permission is required from Lake Ohau Station).
