Otamatapaio Hut

Otamatapaio Hut is a standard four-bunk backcountry hut in Oteake Conservation Park (Canterbury region), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for first come, first served stays—standard bookings aren’t required—so plan to arrive ready to claim a bunk if it’s free.

Basic hut facilities include a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with pit latrine disposal. Water is not provided at the hut. Use access is via the Otamatapaio River easement. Fees apply: $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). Before your stay, buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts over a 12-month period.
