Martin's Hut

Martin’s Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Longwood Forest Conservation Area (Southland). It’s a basic four-bunk hut built in 1905 by Fred Mason for water-race maintenance workers, and it’s used as a Te Araroa Trail stop near both Invercargill and Riverton.

Use is first come, first served with bookings not required. The hut has a fireplace and pit latrine toilets, and drinking water is untreated, so plan to treat/handle it before drinking. For Te Araroa walkers, use of the hut is tied to carrying the Te Araroa Trail Pass, and access is by marked route off Cascade Road; Martin’s Hut also connects to the Turnbull’s Hut area and then on toward Round Hill via marked trail.
