Mason Bay Hut

Mason Bay Hut is a Department of Conservation standard 20-bunk backcountry hut in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura. It’s set up for multi-day trips from Freshwater landing; the hut route is commonly planned as a 4–6 day round trip and is rated Advanced by the operator.

Use is first come, first served—standard bookings aren’t required, but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and put it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12 month period). Water at the hut is not treated, so boil it before use; there’s a fireplace, and toilet facilities include a pit latrine. Fees are listed per night for adults and youth, with free entry for children/infants aged 0–4.
