Moerangi Hut
Moerangi Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park on the Moerangi mountain biking and tramping track. It’s set up as an overnight stop for circuit travel and is also used by hunters as the forest transitions from podocarp to beech forest. The hut is maintained by the Department of Conservation and the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association.
For sleeping, it has 9 bunk beds and is operated on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings required. There’s a standard hut ticket system for stays via an honesty box at the hut (or a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts over a 12-month period). Use $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4), with rates changing from 1 July 2026. The hut has mattresses, drinking water is untreated, there’s a fireplace, and toilets are provided via a pit latrine.
