Panekire Hut

Panekire Hut is a 36-bunk backcountry hut on the Waikaremoana Track in the Te Urewera area, managed by the Department of Conservation (Te Papa Atawhai). It’s intended for overnight use on the track. Use requires Great Walk bookings; Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here.

Inside, the hut has sleeping arrangements (mattresses) and a kitchen. Facilities include toilets (pit latrine) and no shower. Drinking water is available but untreated; a fireplace is provided. Rates are per person, per night, with NZ and international prices listed on the operator’s booking page.
