Mount Brown Hut
Mount Brown Hut is a small backcountry hut in Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve, used for tramping in the West Coast region. It’s run by the Department of Conservation and provides 4 bunk beds, with pit latrine toilets and a deck viewpoint over Lake Kaniere and out towards Hokitika and the sea.
Use requires a standard booking, and fees apply by age group. Bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027; if online shows no availability for your dates, the hut is fully booked, and no spaces are kept for arrivals without a booking. Adult (18+ years) is $25 per night; youth (5–17 years) $12.50 per night; children/infants (0–4 years) are free. Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here. The hut has drinking water that’s untreated, and it includes a fireplace and mattresses.
