North Tikotatahi Hunters Hut

North Tikotatahi Hunters Hut is a basic six-bunk backcountry hut in the Stewart Island/Rakiura area, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s designed for hunters accessing booked hunting blocks, and it’s available for public use as a place to stay while you’re on the island’s backcountry. Use is by booking through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre; plan on navigating yourself because the hut has no DOC track access.

The hut has very limited facilities: multi-fuel burners, mattress bunks, an indoor/outdoor bench, a meat safe, a toilet with pit latrine disposal, and basic tools/cleaning items. Water at the hut is not treated, so boil it before use. Bring what you need for cooking—there are no cooking options or utensils in the hut. Fees are $30 per person for the length of your stay, up to 10 days maximum, with payment and bookings handled via the Visitor Centre.
