Okui Hut
Okui Hut is a Department of Conservation standard backcountry hut in Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park (East Coast region). The hut provides 8 bunks and is available on a first come, first served basis—no standard booking is required—sleeping 8. A mattress is provided, and there is a fireplace, along with toilet facilities using a pit latrine system; there is no drinking water provided.
For overnight stays, you need a Standard Hut Ticket (adult blue, youth yellow) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut; alternatively, a Backcountry Hut Pass covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period. An access bridge is no longer in place, so the river is crossed by foot when weather conditions allow—river levels can rise quickly, so plan around that before you go.
