Otukota Hut
Otukota Hut is a six-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It uses a wood stove for heating and has a water supply from a tank (drinking water is untreated). The hut has a toilet system with pit latrine disposal, and there’s a fireplace.
Bookings aren’t required: it’s standard first come, first served. Before you stay, buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period). In January 2022, the hut was renovated by Backcountry Trust volunteers. Fees are listed as adult $10 per night and youth (5–17 years) $5 per night through 30 June 2026; child/infant (0–4 years) is free.
