Penn Creek Hut

Penn Creek Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation in the Wellington/Kapiti region. It’s first-come, first-served—no standard bookings are required—and you need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night, placed in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass).

Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). The hut is best accessed via Otaki Forks, then follow the track to Field Hut and Table Top. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets with pit latrine disposal.
