Poet Hut

Poet Hut is a standard four-bunk backcountry hut in the Kokatahi River – Whitcombe River area on the West Coast, run by the Department of Conservation. The hut is first come, first served (no standard bookings required), and you need to buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night you stay, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts during the 12-month period.

Sleeping is in bunks (four people total), and the hut has a fireplace and toilets with pit-latrine disposal; drinking water is not provided. Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). Before setting out, plan on an advanced/experts-only approach and use the provided DOC hut ticket/pass system to match your stay dates and the applicable rates.
