Saddle (Mangaawai) Hut

Saddle (Mangaawai) Hut is a basic DOC backcountry hut on the saddle between the Mangaawai and Kahutapere Streams, near the Apiti Hut. It’s a small 4-bunk hut and is used for trampers heading through the area, with a wood fire and a long-drop toilet as the core facilities.

Stays run on a first-come, first-served basis. Before you go, buy a Standard Hut Ticket (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass) and put the ticket payment in the hut’s honesty box for your night(s). The hut is not ratproof, so plan food storage accordingly, and be ready for the simple, “carry what you need” style of hut use.
