Alpine hutScone Hut is a six-bunk standard hut in the Whataroa area on the West Coast, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s in the Glaciers area and is set up for first-come, first-served stays rather than standard bookings.
Facilities include a pit latrine and a fireplace. Drinking water is untreated, so treat it before use. Use requires a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) placed in the honesty box at the hut for each night you stay, or a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period; rates change from 1 July 2026.
