Shallow Bay Hut
Shallow Bay Hut is a six-bunk backcountry hut in Fiordland National Park, managed by the Department of Conservation. It’s used for standard hut trips in the Lake Manapouri area and is set up for first-come-first-served stays (no bookings required), with payment handled via a hut ticket in an honesty box or by using a Backcountry Hut Pass.
Access is via the Kepler Track (about 1.5 hours’ walk from Rainbow Reach Carpark) or by boat on Lake Manapouri. The hut has a mattress and a fireplace, plus toilets served by a pit latrine; there’s no drinking water provided, so plan to bring your own or treat water you collect. Fees apply (Adult 18+ $10 per night; Youth 5–17 $5; Child/Infant 0–4 free) for the rate period up to 30 June 2026.
