Shamrock Hut

Shamrock Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Ahuriri Conservation Park (Canterbury region). It’s a standard two-bunk hut in the Mackenzie Country/Waitaki area, and the hut is approached via the Ahuriri Valley—about 2 hours (4 km) up the Ahuriri Valley to the end of Birchwood Road. Use is first come, first served with no bookings required.

The hut has two bunk beds, with a pit latrine toilet on site and a fireplace. Hut stay requires an honesty-box ticket: buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night (blue for adults, yellow for youth) and place it in the honesty box at the hut; there’s also a Backcountry Hut Pass option for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period. Fees run through 30 June 2026 (adult $10 per night, youth $5 per night, child/infant free), with updated hut and sole-occupancy fees applying from 1 July 2026.
