Smyth Hut

Smyth Hut is a Department of Conservation standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the Harihari area (West Coast). It’s in the Glaciers area and is set up for use by first-time visitors without a booking requirement—sleeping is on a first come, first served basis at the hut.

For planning, the hut uses pit latrines and has a fireplace and mattresses. Drinking water is untreated. Hut fees are charged, with payment handled via a hut ticket placed in the honesty box (or a Backcountry Hut Pass), and fees are listed on the hut’s official page; adult, youth, and child/infant rates are specified through 30 June 2026.
