Southwest Arm Hunters Hut
Southwest Arm Hunters Hut is a backcountry hunting hut in Stewart Island/Rakiura and Rakiura National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a basic six-bunk hut with very limited facilities, intended for hunters who have booked the surrounding hunting blocks.
The hut has a multi-fuel burner and mattresses, plus a water supply from a 1000-litre rainwater tank (the water is untreated and must be boiled). There’s a toilet (pit latrine), and an axe or saw, broom, and dust pan are provided; you won’t find cooking utensils or cooking options in the hut. Bookings are required, with stays priced at $30 per person for the length of stay up to 10 days maximum, arranged through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. The hut has no DOC track access, so plan your route and navigate yourself using map, compass, and GPS.
