Stafford Hut

Stafford Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Jackson Bay–Gorge River area on New Zealand’s West Coast. It’s a standard six-bunk hut used for South Westland backcountry trips, with use managed on a first-come, first-served basis (no standard bookings required).

There’s a single, shared pit latrine, and drinking water is untreated. The hut has a fireplace, and it provides mattresses; a maximum capacity of 6 people is listed. A hut ticket is required for stays: buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most standard and serviced huts for a 12-month period. Access to this area involves fast-rising waterways—avoid crossing any waterway in heavy rain and wait for water levels to drop.
