Sudden Valley Bivouac
Sudden Valley Bivvy is a basic two-bunk backcountry hut in Arthur’s Pass National Park (Canterbury region), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a lean-to with bedding provided (mattresses), free to use, and no bookings are required—first come, first served.
There’s no DOC track access to the bivvy. The route to Sudden Valley Bivvy is not maintained and is only sporadically marked; access is further limited by river crossings, with multiple unbridged crossings that are only passable when rivers are low. Due to significant flood damage, much of the route has been washed away and the climb to get around Barrier can take longer than expected; plan to navigate with a map, compass, and GPS. Toilets are pit latrine; no fireplace is provided.
