Route Details

Summit Lake Emergency Shelter is a Parks Canada emergency shelter on the Akshayuk Pass route in Auyuittuq National Park. It’s a basic cabin-type refuge intended for severe-weather shelter or emergencies rather than day-to-day accommodation.

Use is free and there’s no reservation system; it’s first-come, first-served. The shelter does not provide running water, electricity, or heating; plan on primitive use and bring what you need for your party, including communication devices if you’re in bear country.

Auyuittuq National Park has a mandatory safety orientation before entering the park, and visitors are required to complete park registration. Facilities in the broader shelter area include nearby outhouses, and the shelter has been used as a staging point for emergency assistance when evacuation by aircraft wasn’t possible.
