Alpine hutTaipo Hut is a standard four-bunk backcountry hut in Mavora Lakes Conservation Park (Southland). It’s run by the Department of Conservation and is a first-come, first-served hut—no standard bookings are required, but you do need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night you stay (or a Backcountry Hut Pass that covers most standard huts).
Water is available only part of the year: the water supply is turned off from May until October. Fees apply (with different nightly rates for adults, youth, and children/infants), and there’s a pit latrine at the hut. Mattresses are provided, and there’s no fireplace.
