Tawonga Huts

Tawonga Huts are four Alpine National Park backcountry shelters beside a mountain stream, set along the Fainter Fire Trail about 4 km from Pretty Valley Pondage. They’re intended for shelter and emergency use, not as primary accommodation—use a tent or swag on nearby grassy flats for overnighting.

The fire trail is open to walkers, bike riders, and horse riders. Bring what you need for a self-supported stay (sleeping bag, food, and a tent if you plan to sleep outside the hut), since the huts aren’t set up as staffed accommodation. Keep the hut shared and user-maintained: expect communal sleeping/kitchen/living areas and plan to help keep it clean, including chopping firewood and shovelling snow if conditions require it.

When planning a trip, treat the huts as an “access by hiking (or riding), then shelter” option rather than a guaranteed overnight base—conditions and access can change, and the hut may be inaccessible or closed for safety reasons. Follow the High Country Huts code of conduct and local restrictions (including rules around dogs, firearms, and generators).
