Te Au Hut

Te Au Hut is a small DOC backcountry hut in Fiordland National Park, set in the Murchison Mountains’ specially protected area. It’s a basic, bunk-style refuge built in 1963, sleeping a small group (capacity 4) and used as an overnight base on conservation-land tramping itineraries around Lake Te Anau’s Fiordland corridor.

Plan on hut-style facilities: an open fireplace, a long-drop toilet, and a rainwater collection tank feeding water storage for the hut. Access is restricted in this specially protected area, with permits required for takahē conservation—so expect to travel with the right authorization before you go, and be ready for DOC-style first-night logistics rather than casual walk-in entry.
