Te Totara Hut
Te Totara Hut is a standard six-bunk DOC backcountry hut in Te Urewera (East Coast region). It was built for deer culler accommodation in 1952 and remains a small timber hut with a fireplace. The hut sits in a small clearing beside Parahaki Stream, and DOC Aniwaniwa manages the facility.
Day use and overnight stays are set up as standard hut use with first come, first served sleeping—bookings aren’t required. To stay overnight, buy a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut; an alternative Backcountry Hut Pass also gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period. Fees for hut tickets apply (adult $10 per night, youth $5 per night, children/infants free), and the hut has pit latrine toilets; drinking water is untreated.
