Top Butler Hut
Top Butler Hut is a Department of Conservation six-bunk backcountry hut in the Whataroa area on New Zealand’s West Coast, in the Glaciers area. Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—but a Standard Hut Ticket is needed for each night and is placed in the honesty box at the hut; alternatively, a Backcountry Hut Pass can cover stays at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.
The hut has six sleeping bunks and includes a mattress, plus a fireplace and toilet facilities with pit latrine disposal. Drinking water is untreated. Because the hut sits in a flooding-risk river area, don’t stay there when heavy rain is forecast; there’s serious flood risk from rock debris in the river bed.
