Turnbull Bivouac

Turnbull Bivouac is a basic two-bunk hut run by the Department of Conservation in the Lochinvar Forest Conservation Area, Canterbury. It’s set up for backcountry use with first come, first served access and no bookings required. Use is free, and the hut includes a fire (and toilets with pit latrine disposal).

Approach-wise, the Minchin Pass Route takes you most of the way; from there you need to turn off onto the Turnbull Bivouac Route across the river and up to Turnbull Bivvy. DOC lists the trip to the hut as taking about 3–4 days, with difficulty aimed at expert parties.
