Upper Lords Hunters Hut

Upper Lords Hunters Hut is a basic six-bunk hut on Stewart Island/Rakiura, run by the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust in the Stewart Island/Rakiura hunting area within Rakiura National Park. Use is for hunters who have booked the surrounding hunting blocks, but it is available for the public to use as a backcountry hut after booking through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

The hut is equipped with multi-fuel burners and a 1000-litre rainwater tank; drinking water is not treated, and it needs to be boiled before use. Sleeping is on mattresses, with a meat safe, plus toilet facilities (pit latrine) and tools for hut upkeep (an axe or saw, broom, and dust pan). It’s basic accommodation only—there are no cooking options or utensils—so plan to bring what you need for your own food and cooking setup.

Bookings are essential and the stay fee is $30 per person for up to 10 days (for example, $30 for a single night as well as $30 for up to 9 nights). Access is route-planning and navigation-based: it has no DOC track access, so bring map, compass, and GPS for self-navigation.
