Upper Oreti Hut

Upper Oreti Hut is a DOC-managed historic musterers hut in the Eyre Mountains/Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park area near the upper Oreti River. It’s a basic backcountry stop with 6 bunk beds (mattresses provided) and an open fireplace for heating and cooking.

The hut is free to use and no booking is required; plan on first-come, first-served. Water comes from a stream behind the hut—boil before use—and there’s a non-flush toilet on site. A 4WD approach is possible on a rough track, but you must get a gate key in advance from the Invercargill DOC office; the access involves a stream crossing that can become soft and difficult after high rainfall.
