Waikamaka Hut

Waikamaka Hut is a backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, in the Manawatū/Whanganui region, run and maintained by the Heretaunga Tramping Club. It’s a standard eight-bunk hut, with no standard bookings required—overnight stays are first come, first served.

The hut has sleeping accommodation (mattresses), an indoor fireplace, and toilets (pit latrine). Water is available but is untreated, so plan to treat it before drinking. Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here. Access is not via a DOC-managed track to the hut; you’ll need to plan and navigate yourself, and be especially cautious if your route involves unbridged rivers or side streams—don’t cross when water is high or you can’t find safe entry/exit points.
