Wakelings Hut
Wakelings Hut is a Department of Conservation standard four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Manawatu/Whanganui). It has an open fire for heating and a water source from a river; toilets use a pit latrine. Use is straightforward: no bookings are required and it’s first come, first served for the four bunks; still, you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket (adult or youth) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut.
Access is on foot: walk up the Kawhatau River from the Rangitane road bridge across the Kawhatau River. The route may not be passable during times of high river flow. To reach the Rangitane road bridge, head just north from Mangaweka, turn right off SH1, cross the Rangitikei River, then follow Kawhatau Valley Road to Upper Kawhatau Valley Road, which becomes Rangitane Road.
