Welcome Flat Hut
Welcome Flat Hut is a serviced Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, set in the Glaciers area. The hut has 31 bunk beds in four bunk rooms on the upper level, plus the Sierra Room—an adjacent sole-occupancy room for groups of up to four with its own separate access.
Bookings are required, and you need to be fully equipped for backcountry use (including a gas cooker and cooking equipment); the hut doesn’t provide cooking facilities and you must carry portable cookers. Toilets are shared (pit latrine disposal), and use runs on Backcountry Hut Passes from 1 May to 30 September (not accepted from 1 October to 30 April). Fees apply: Backcountry Hut Pass pricing is $30 per night for adults (18+), $15 per night for children/youth (5–17), and free for infants (0–4); the Sierra Room (sole occupancy) is $145 per night for up to four people. Fire regulations limit the Sierra Room to no more than four people at a time; rubbish facilities aren’t provided, so pack out what you pack in.
