Whirinaki Recreation Camp

Whirinaki Recreation Camp is a Department of Conservation outdoor recreation and education centre in Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park on New Zealand’s East Coast. It’s set up for groups such as schools, with on-site cabins and space for outdoor activities.

It sleeps 30 people in 3 cabins (10 per cabin). A candle-light system is used for lighting, there’s a wood heater in all cabins, and there’s a large open-sided cooking shelter with a wood BBQ (fuel is provided). There are flush toilets. The camp uses a booking-only model: bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027, and the gate is locked on arrival—your booking key opens both your cabin and the gate, with key collection from a lockbox near the carpark. Fees run by per-cabin rates with off-peak and a peak window (23 December–16 January), and fees change from 1 July 2026; phone/in-person bookings at a visitor centre add a $10 service fee.
