Anne Hut
Anne Hut is a serviced backcountry hut in the St James Conservation Area (Canterbury), run by the Department of Conservation. The hut has 20 bunk beds and requires bookings; no spaces are held for walk-ins when the hut is fully booked. Backcountry Hut Passes are accepted for use in the hut from 1 May to 30 September, and they are not accepted from 1 October to 30 April (but the hut pass is valid for camping within 200 metres of the hut all year round).
Inside, there’s a fireplace, mattresses, drinking water (untreated), and toilets with a pit latrine disposal system. There is no radio at the hut—carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for emergency contact. Firewood is supplied but can run out; if needed, gather dead wood nearby (don’t fell or break live trees). Bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027; if no online availability shows for your dates, the hut is fully booked.
