Cloudy Hut

Cloudy Hut is a private 4-bunk backcountry shelter on New Zealand’s South Island, positioned on the eastern side of the Cloudy Peak Range in Canterbury. It’s an off-grid hut with an open fire and basic heating, and it collects water from a roof into a tank.

Access is by rough track rising from the Clarence River, or by 4WD from Cloudy Road (the 4WD route can be heavily eroded). Because the hut sits on private high-country land and crosses working station/track areas, prior landowner permission is often required for access beyond the public tracks.
