Fosters Hut
Fosters Hut is a standard 4-bunk backcountry hut in Mount Richmond Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation in the Marlborough region. It was built in 1967 and is in the hills east of Fosters Clearing, overlooking Blenheim and the lower Wairau Valley. Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—though you do need to buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and put it in the honesty box at the hut.
The hut has drinking water, but it’s untreated, so plan to filter or treat. Sleep is on mattresses, and a fireplace is available. The toilets use a pit latrine system. Fees are charged (adult $10 per night; youth $5 per night; child/infant free) with rate updates from 1 July 2026, and severe weather or forestry operations can lead to road closures into Mount Richmond Forest Park.
