Hurunui No 3 Hut

Hurunui No 3 Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Lake Sumner Forest Park (North Canterbury / Arthur’s Pass area). It’s a standard 16-bunk hut built on an old 1860s gold miners pack track; it sleeps up to 16 people, and bookings aren’t required—stays are first come, first served with hut tickets used via an honesty box.

Inside, the hut has 16 bunks (12 in the main room and 4 in the small T section). A wood burner is used for heating (the original tin chimney was removed in 1996), and there’s a pit latrine toilet system. Water is untreated drinking water; bring a method to treat it before use. Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+) and $5 per night for youth (5–17); children/infants 0–4 years are free. Pets aren’t allowed.
