Jervois Hut
Jervois Hut is a basic three-bunk backcountry hut in the St James Conservation Area, run by the Department of Conservation. Use is free and no bookings are required—plan on going first come, first served.
The track to Jervois Hut is closed to motorised vehicles during winter, and gate codes change every month between October and May. From a formed 4WD track passing Scotties Hut, you continue to the point where vehicles are no longer allowed (“no vehicles beyond this point”), then walk about 2.5 hours to the hut; there’s no marked route, so you’ll need navigation and you should be prepared for unbridged river crossings and changing river/stream conditions. The hut has canvas bunks and there’s a fireplace; there’s no drinking water and no toilets.
