Lake McRae Hut

Lake McRae Hut is a backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation in Molesworth Recreation Reserve (Marlborough region). It’s a standard 6-bunk hut, and it’s used on a first-come, first-served basis with no bookings required; for each night stay, you need a Standard Hut Ticket (and place it in the honesty box at the hut) or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts over a 12-month period.

The hut has mattresses, and it includes a fireplace and pit latrine toilets. Standard nightly fees are $10 for adults (18+), $5 for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4); updated hut and sole-occupancy fees apply from 1 July 2026.
