Mackenzie Bivvy (East Branch)
Mackenzie Bivvy (East Branch) is a basic two-bunk backcountry hut in Lake Sumner Forest Park (Canterbury region) managed by the Department of Conservation. It’s a free use bivvy with no bookings required; expect first come, first served use.
DOC access is unmanaged: there is no DOC track to the hut, so you’ll need to plan your route and navigate using map, compass, and GPS. Inside, there are two bunks; there’s a fireplace, but no mattresses are provided. There’s also no drinking water—bring what you need—and the toilet is a pit latrine.
