Mt Fell Hut

Mt Fell Hut is a Department of Conservation standard 6-bunk hut in Mount Richmond Forest Park (Marlborough). It sits on the bushline about 1 km south of Mt Fell summit (1602 m), just below an alpine meadow, and it was built in 1964 and moved/tidied in 2017. Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—but you do need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night (or a Backcountry Hut Pass) placed in the honesty box at the hut.

The hut has 6 sleeping places, untreated drinking water, a fireplace, and pit latrine toilets. Forestry operations in the area can close roads into Mount Richmond Forest Park, and severe weather has damaged many roads in the Marlborough Sounds—so check the latest road status before you travel. The approach track sidles through mountain beech and tussock to the main ridge above Timms Creek, then descends steeply about 900 m to Timms Creek fork where it crosses an unbridged creek (wet weather can make this tricky). From Timms Creek it follows to Timms Flat, then continues about 2.5 km through native bush and pine plantations to the Timms Creek car park at the end of Te Rou Road.
